If we end up surviving this incident, I think we’ll be able to add ‘qualified repairman’ to our CV. The number of critical systems that have failed or were on the verge of failing that we’ve had to patch up and fix has been large indeed, with each maintenance job tangentially allowing us forward progress. What few living people we’ve met on our travels have been doing all they can to either keep the place from further falling to bits, hiding or both, forcing us to do what they cannot.

While it’s far more realistic for things to break in Mars City as a consequence of the attack, you can’t help but envy Doomguy in the previous games and how simple he had it. The most he had to do was press a couple of switches and hunt for key cards, neither of which was beyond his remit as a UAC marine. I will admit, however, that the side missions in this game do give the story more depth and variety, something the original games certainly lack.
