Let’s Replay Doom 3 BFG Edition #42: Nuff Said [Strobe Warning]

The nameless marine is all that stands between the demons and their total conquest of Earth. In our possession is the Soul Cube, the weapon the ancient aliens sacrificed themselves specifically to combat this threat should it ever rise up again and my, am I glad they were that considerate. We have weapons enough to slay an entire army of demons but the guardian of the second portal is another matter entirely. Can we end the invasion and save humanity? Will the Soul Cube be enough and just what is the guardian that it needs such a powerful artefact to defeat?
Doom 3 is over and my, was returning to is a hugely fun and unique experience. I’d forgotten how well built and enjoyable the game is, how it builds an ominous and eerie atmosphere with the dark, cramped and cold walls of Mars City. I love that they pulled out all the stops to make the demons both familiar and new all at once and I like the slow progression of difficulty that lets you get used to them while also being nearly overwhelmed. The lack of music is a fascinating choice and one that pays off, allowing the atmospheric noises and the sounds of combat to be the orchestra of each scene. The storytelling – something that Doom wasn’t known for until then – is also great, giving you glimpses of what life was like before the disaster and also impressing upon you the urgency of the task you pick up during the game. The voice acting was also very good, especially Betruger who chewed every scene like it was a well done steak. It’s not all perfect, of course; the game suffers from some serious monster closet moments and it tries to startle you with monsters dumping out through opening doors on more than one occasion. It also lacked variety in the models of the people you meet along the way though that was quite common for the time. The platforming also left a little to be desired sometimes but those are all relatively minor complaints for what was otherwise a very enjoyable experience. If you haven’t given Doom 3 a chance yet I encourage you to do so.
Normally this would be the part where I try to hint at what’s next but there’s nothing to guess at this time. We’re not yet done with Doom 3 and so next time we’re moving on from the base game to its expansion, something that I said I would never do all those years ago. Well, times change, I’ve changed with them and now I feel it’s time to return to Mars and face off against the demons once more in… Resurrection of Evil. I hope you’ll join me there.
See you next let’s play!
