The initial defenders of Sendai’s enclave have fallen, securing us the key need to get further in. Though our party shouldn’t know what threats lie ahead of them down the two possible paths forward, the cutscene we got to pry upon gave us all the information we need. Faced with the prospect of battling slaves or poisonous spiders, you’ll want to bet that we’ll tackle the former for two reasons: first, defeating the slavemaster might secure the freedom of those slaves who don’t battle us and secondly, spiders.

In Baldur’s Gate, always say no to spiders.

Taking that path, however, makes all the more obvious a large flaw in the game: the colossal amount of low to mid level magic gear that practically everyone is armed with now. Most of this is so that the main character can still be hit by melee attacks if they took immunity to normal and +1 weapons at the end of Shadows of Amn and the rest of it is so you can get more money but at this point, our party doesn’t need more money. We have over 200,000 gold and practically nothing to spend it on outside of scrolls and the odd bit of very costly and ultimately useless magical gear. That doesn’t mean to say I’m not going to loot it, of course; coin is coin and my companions would be aghast if I turned it down.

There is ONE situation where all this money might be useful, however. I’ve played through the entirety of Shadows of Amn but not everyone will do this. Characters created fresh for the expansion don’t start with a lot of coin and so you might very well need all the stuff you find in these areas to buy high level scrolls for your wizards and gear from the merchants in Saradush, Amkethran and Watcher’s Keep. This is something I didn’t think about when recording this video but, now that I ponder this fact, it makes sense that there’d be a lot of sell fodder so that a ‘new’ character and their party can catch up in power fast enough to stand a chance against the difficult bosses that lay ahead.
