Though it may seem so when you first start playing this game, the alien are neither omnipotent nor omniscient. The aliens will only act against threat they’ve seen and while they do ‘remember’ where your soldier are, they first need to find you. A mistake many players make – including myself at times – is to cover dangerous ground quickly, forgoing cover and opportunities to hide to explore the map fast. There’s an argument to be made for not going to slowly but the opposite is far more dangerous, for the aliens can see further than your soldiers and will use aimed shots to take our your troops from the safety of the Fog of War. Before you know it, you don’t have a squad anymore and the mission is a failure.

If you can slowly but surely explore an area while keeping your troops concealed and protected by cover, do so. Not only does that minimise the risk of your soldiers being killed, it gives you the chance of surprising the aliens and springing an ambush before they can ambush you. That said, don’t keep your soldiers clustered together too tightly, as that’s an invitation for an alien grenade to ruin your day or worse, a blaster bomb.
