READ THIS, if you don't want to watch the long video. (or even if you do, for that matter) This video shows the GTX 1070 vs the 980 Ti, both with proper drivers.

In parts 1 & 2 of the GTX 1070 performance discussion, I said a lot of glowing things about the 980 Ti and a lot of criticisms of the GTX 1070. So I thought it would be a good idea to show both cards playing games, in one uncut video. Was it a good idea?

Honestly? I don't know. The video is pretty long, and neither card walked away the clear winner. (although, I think the edge could arguably go to the GTX 1070) Both cards were being pushed, with the settings and resolution used in this video. Both cards had moments where they could barely hang onto 60fps, and other moments where they seemed to perform effortlessly.

But... In real world performance, my GTX 1070 isn't exactly "demolishing" the 980 Ti. Based on Nvidia's marketing and the results that many reviewers have shared, I would expect the 1070 to win more decisively.

Also... I make this clear in the video: My GTX 1070 was actually performing a little better today than it did in the first two videos. If it had performed, in this video, the way it had in the first two videos, the 980 Ti would have tied or beaten it in most scenarios. This leads to one of my complaints about using my (two) 1070's so far: The performance from them has been inconsistent. Sometimes they easily beat the 980 Ti, while other times they tie the 980 Ti or lose to it.

Some commenters have said their Gigabyte and MSI GTX 1070's run cooler than my Founder's 1070 and Zotac Amp! 1070, so it's possible that I just have two or the worst performing cards. I have ordered a water cooled 1070 to see if that finally gives me the performance I've been looking for.

Also... I've been experimenting with 3200Mhz GSkill Trident Z RAM. Stay tuned to see if that helps.

Note of embarrassment:
I spent a lot of time, over this, and the last video, praising the 980 Ti and promising it would deliver on a couple things. In this video, the 980 Ti mostly delivered. (it also beat the 1070, in the The Division's benchmark test) But the 980 Ti also stumbled and failed, in areas where I predicted it would succeed.

I have a couple things to say on that.

One: The temperature, outside, today, was lower than it was, outside, yesterday, which may mean that ambient temperatures, overall, were better today, which would benefit the 1070.

When I had tested both cards, the day and night prior, the 980 Ti was doing better than the 1070, in many regards. I went into this video, feeling confident that the 980 Ti would look better against the 1070 than it did. (in this particular video)

I think the cooler temperatures, today, helped the 1070 pull ahead.

Two: I do not every want to cherry pick footage to make my claims look accurate. I decided to post this video, anyway, as a result. If I try to make this exact same live demonstration again, it is possible that what I normally see happen will take place, and the 1070 would look worse. But... I will not play games with cherry picking footage, on this channel. (I will, however, be doing a rematch, with 3200 speed RAM, so we'll see what happens then) And, as I've said, the 980 Ti and the 1070 still performed very similarly, overall.

Further note: I rewatched this entire video. The 980 Ti did not do as badly as all of my apologizing makes it sound. And as a matter of fact, once I turned Level of detail down from "84" to "80," the 980 Ti was very close to the GTX 1070, in The Division. I just felt bad that I had promised the 980 Ti would not dip below 60fps, and then it did. (but lowering Level of Detail by 4% kept the 980 Ti above 60fps)
