Ryugu, officially known as 162173 Ryugu, is a near-Earth asteroid belonging to the Apollo group. It was discovered on May 10, 1999, by the Lincoln Near-Earth Asteroid Research (LINEAR) project. The name "Ryugu" refers to the "Ryūgū-jō," the Dragon Palace of Japanese folklore, a magical underwater palace.

This asteroid gained prominence due to the mission of the Japanese spacecraft Hayabusa2, which visited Ryugu in 2018. Hayabusa2 collected samples of the asteroid and returned them to Earth in 2020. These samples revealed fascinating information, including the presence of organic compounds such as uracil (a component of RNA) and vitamin B3, essential for life.

Ryugu is approximately 900 meters in diameter and has a unique, dark surface. Its composition suggests that it may have formed from the fragments of a larger asteroid.
