Liquidation is an indie RTS project, mixing sci-fi and fantasy, which I found a few years ago and it has been steadily moving forward, with the developers adding factions, units, abilities, and other functionality.
Not only have they recently found a publisher and will move forward faster now, but they have made a playtest available right now on Steam. You can test out the Crusader and Legion factions in 1v1,2v2 or free for all game modes in skirmish and multiplayer. Do note there are only two maps available right now and the AI is prone to bug out on you, so don’t be discouraged as it is a work in progress after all.
Its story and lore talk about a war-torn world of Veá, on which forces of the Twilight Crusade and the Scourge alliance fight over a new resource which has been found after a cataclysmic event which wiped out almost all life on the planet.
The gameplay is designed to be quick, with lots of tactical options and both heroes and units which have special abilities you can use or cast in battle. Many units have multiple upgrades you can unlock with tech for them and even turn them into better versions with higher damage or better attacks.
It reminds of both Warcraft III and Down of War in different aspects and has neutral creeps which guard resource expansions on each map. The two resources do look very similar to Starcraft II and base building isn’t much different with turrets included in the gameplay.
What the developers have nailed down so far is the fantastic unit design and art style, as well as the flow of combat. The visual effects might not show it off the best, but that is one area I am sure they will improve soon. The unit callouts are decent if repeating and the sound design has improved since the last time I tested this game.
The two currently playable factions, of which one is 95% completed and the other about 60%, both have two recruitable heroes each, and they have their own special powers you unlock as you tech up both your main base and their summoning buildings. There are several levels of such upgrades for armor value and weapon damage, while unique upgrades give units new functions, abilities or different stronger weapons.
