217The other day I felt like playing and archiving a zombie game and a particular title came to mind that gave a unique twist to the zombie genre. Lollipop Chainsaw is a collaboration between creators Suda51 and James Gunn who are both known for their crazy and whacky creations. But often very awesome whacky creations!
Lollipop Chainsaw tells the story of cheerleader Juliet who was raised in a family of zombie hunters. On this fateful day, which also happens to be her birthday, a ton of zombies swarm her hometown and it is up to us to save the day. From the very opening cutscene the game lets you know not to take things too serious. There are a lot of jokes throughout the game and every time it throws something new your way. Your boyfriend Nick gets bitten by a zombie and instead of putting him down, Juliet performs a magic ritual to save just his head. So the entire game you have a talking head dangling at your hip that provides plenty of witty commentary.
The gameplay is your standard hack 'n slash where you perform combos and sometimes unleash a super. You gain new abilities like long range attacks or a dash as you progress through each level, but the real charm of the game is just its insane atmosphere and its characters. Each boss is very unique and needs to be tackled in very different ways.
Not every joke landed with me and sometimes it did feel like the writing was a bit cringe, but it did absolutely pull a few laughs from my mouth and overal I enjoyed my time with Juliet and Nick very much. I'm looking forward to the remake that is scheduled to come out later this year!
