The original State of Decay was a surprise hit during the time when survival zombie games were at its peak. It was the age of DayZ videos on YouTube and State of Decay offered a lower budget alternative for those who wanted to play DayZ singleplayer. Though it offered somewhat of a story it mostly played as a zombie sandbox where you would scavenge and survive as you moved from place to place with a bunch of other characters. The coolest thing about the game was that if a character died, then that character would be gone for good and you would have to play the rest of the game as a different person.
With State of Decay being such a hit, expectations were high for its sequel as now they promised bigger and better worlds with a higher budget behind them. But the end result was honestly kind of lacking. The game is still quite fun, but in many ways it feels like a very, very small step forward compared to the first game.
You get to play as various characters and meet other people who you can invite to your settlement. Instead of a proper linear storyline, you take on various random missions in order to upgrade your character's standing in order to unlock a final mission. Playing the game in co-op makes the overal experience way more fun as the action is fast paced and easy to pick up and play. There are quite a few mechanics that the game throws at you in the beginning and the item management can be a bit overshelming for newcomers.
Overall the experience with State of Decay 2 was great, but it was not the upgrade I was hoping for compared to the first game. The first game had a very rushed ending, but was so incredibly charming and surprising due to its ability to replicate that feeling of a zombie survival game for singleplayer lovers. From what I understand there is DLC for State of Decay 2 which plays more like a linear story with proper mission structure, so we might bundle our forces again in the future to see if that gives us the zombie experience we are yearning for.
