198Today we archive the very first observation style horror game on this channel. Observation horror games have gained immense popularity over the last 2 years or so. The premise is simple and can be done in various formats. Basically you go through an area again and again and have to look at the various items and props to see if anything has changed. Posters on the wall might have changed or maybe there is an extra prop in the corner where there was none before. If you see something strange then you either head back or if everything is fine and dandy, then you continue upward.
You also have this format in games where you look through cameras, but ever since Exit 8 it has become popular to do this in real time in various locations like a subway station, a train or in this case an apartment building.
Though I find the premise of looking for clues or hints of things changing a fun experience, what always leaves me wanting with these types of games is the lack of story. You just loop again and again and again, but I personally am more a fan of horror games that tell a proper narrative.
The Stairway 7 does an excellent job of progressing through the 70 floors that you have to check and there were some really effective scares that got me good. I do wish there was a bit more story though, since the developer's previous Backrooms game is still one of my favorites and I cannot wait to see what he will come up with next!
