The release of the Lollipop Chainsaw remake has been postponed until 2024, signifying a significant departure from the era of linear, AA hack-and-slash games. Even the God of War series, which was at the more upscale end of this genre, has largely moved away from its hack-and-slash origins. Although it maintains its violent nature and captivating gameplay, combo counters are no longer part of the equation, resulting in a more restrained experience.
This doesn't imply a complete absence of hack-and-slash titles, but they are notably less prevalent in an era dominated by trends such as cinematic presentations, intricate storytelling, and immersive online interactions.
Nevertheless, a revival of the cult classic hack-and-slash game, Lollipop Chainsaw, has been recently confirmed. The game's return was anticipated in 2023, but its release has been pushed back to the summer of 2024. Dragami Games, the developer, explained in a statement that the delay for the rebranded Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP is aimed at ensuring the game's quality aligns with fan expectations.
In a press release, Dragami Games stated, "While the development of RePOP was initially aimed at a 2023 launch, our dedication to delivering the finest possible gaming experience to our players prompted us to make the challenging decision to extend the development timeline to guarantee this outcome. We extend our sincere apologies to all those who had been eagerly anticipating the latest addition to the Lollipop Chainsaw series and kindly request your comprehension of this situation."
At present, no gameplay footage has been unveiled for Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, but the anticipation is that the end result will validate the wait. Created by renowned director James Gunn, Lollipop Chainsaw follows the story of a high school cheerleader battling zombies in a vibrant post-apocalyptic setting. While it didn't achieve significant critical or commercial success, the game has garnered a dedicated following.
