Luke Walton discusses coaching the Warriors' 2015-16 season opener
WARRIORS PRACTICE FACILITY, OAKLAND, CA -- Golden State Warriors interim head coach Luke Walton will be coaching the team's 2015-16 season opener while Steve Kerr recovers from complications stemming from his back surgery.
Walton confirmed that Kerr's return is imminent, stating that Kerr has been "hanging around practice more and more, hanging around the office a little more."
In fact, on Saturday, Kerr participated in practice.
"Since he's left, this is probably the most involvement he's had (since) being out," Walton said. "We put in a couple new plays at the end of practice."
When asked if coaching the Summer League team had been helpful this past July, Walton said there was a big difference: "The NBA guys, they don't need to impress you (like Summer League players would). For the most part, they're established."
Walton also said the preseason benefitted himself more than the players. Walton compiled a 3-3 record in preseason. A game in which the Warriors trailed 85-70 with 2:16 remaining in the third quarter against the Los Angeles Lakers was called due to condensation on the court at Honda Center in Anaheim, CA last week.
That game did not count against Walton's preseason record. Incidentally, the NBA regular season games Walton will coach as an interim, will go towards the record of Kerr.
