Mafia: Definitive Edition (2020) - Every PC F1 Game
Mafia by Hangar 13/2K/Take-Two Interactive, 2020.
This is a glorious-looking remake of the 2002 Mafia game. Set in the 1930s, it contains some look-alike cars to those of the era. The cars have been heavily revised from the original Mafia game, with most redesigned and some removed. Some have had a total makeover and don't look like the original at all!
Graphics are overall very pleasant in this remake, with nice lighting all round. Sound is (obviously) heavily improved over the original, although I miss the extremely loud birdsong whilst racing (...not really!). There's a few stutters in this capture, but they are fewer and further between in-game, it's pretty smooth overall. Handling here looks a bit quick, but I'm playing on joypad, as it's that sort of a game...
As per the original game, this also features an (infamous) racing mission, which many people (still) complain is quite difficult to complete (particularly at higher difficulty levels)! The track in the game, called Lost Heaven Racing Circuit, is clearly still based on the layout and turns of Laguna Seca, with some added banking on some of the turns.
1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 There's no Monza in the game. The computer controlled cars behave themselves a lot more than the original game, but can still get a bit hooked up on each other!
2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:37 In the 2002 Mafia game, when the race finished you could watch the cars race around by themselves. In this version there's just this short, rendered cinematic. I could have rotated the camera around the car manually as I drove around, but I wanted to show how differently the end of the race is portrayed in this remake. The game does have rain/wet weather, but it doesn't happen in the race.
3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:49 There's no Monaco in this game, just the city of Lost Heaven. There are tunnels in the city, but I thought this view is more in keeping with Monaco, having water alongside the road! This is a different part of the city to the area I used in the original game.
4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:16 Although the game has no Spa-Francorchamps, it does have a corner loosely like Eau Rouge. Even though it's based on The Corkscrew at Laguna Seca... there's no rain here, although it can rain in some locations/scenes of the game.
5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:36 The racing circuit does have a pitlane, but no one will come to fix your damaged car! They've heavily reworked the pits here; nice sofa!
6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:48 Crashes are a bit more fun than in the original game. You can also now roll your car back over if you flip, unlike the original, where your race ended immediately if you turned upside-down.
