Formula Retro Racing (2020) - Every PC F1 Game
Formula Retro Racing by Repixel8, 2020.
A modern take on Sega's Virtua Racing, this game has all the looks but questionable gameplay, when compared to Sega's classic arcade game.
You have a range of standard race/grand prix/eliminator/etc modes, a range of brightly coloured cars, a selection of cheerily colourful tracks (a couple being real), some blippy electronic music (not playing here) and some arcade physics. Sounds good? Well, it's alright really, not too bad.
When the game originally released it was a bit unfinished, with touching any rival car detonating your car! The developer toned it down, so you now have a damage bar, but with only 3 locked tracks at the start, it doesn't take long to unlock everything.
So, overall, a nice style, but the game could have had more substance/structure.
1. Race Start (Monza): 0:00 This isn't Monza, it's actually a take on Fuji, presumably included as a nod towards the classic Pole Position game. You can see how unpredictable the computer-controlled cars can be.
2. Spray Effects (Silverstone): 0:29 No rain, no Silverstone, so here's a beach track!
3. Tunnel & View (Monaco): 0:43 Monaco IS present though, at least an arcade-ified version. Not the worst Monaco, but rather inaccurate.
4. Wet Track (Spa-Francorchamps): 1:00 No rain or Spa, so here's a forest track that winds around a bit!
5. Pitstop (Interlagos): 1:20 Not Interlagos; this is Fuji again, as no other tracks have anything that even looks pitlane like! Despite you picking up damage (then exploding), there's no way to fix your damage. Then again wrecking only delays you for a short while.
6. Huge Crash (Montreal): 1:38 Here we are, causing chaos on the Mountain track. Hitting a rival hard will totally destroy their car (don't worry, it comes flashing back onto the track after a few seconds). When your damage meter reaches maximum you too can explode (here I'm lifted off the edge of the mountain by a rival too!). The big crash goes black and white, then you're returned to the track (sometimes possibly facing not quite the right direction, amusingly.
