Maybe the Mafia series has a much bigger fanbase than I realize, but it's hard to know why this particular early 2000s semi-open world third-person action game was ever considered for a remake in the first place (other than publisher 2K wanting to make more money off an already exisiting IP, that is). The technical accomplishments of the Illusion Softworks original have long since been surpassed, the open world formula itself has evolved (or at least sprawled out) quite a bit over the years and there's really nothing else that's particularly distinctive about the gameplay or storytelling of the first Mafia game.

This is not to say that Mafia: Definitive Edition doesn't possess a certain charm of its own, because it clearly does. Prohibition/Depression-era America has certainly never been this vividly represented in a video game before, and Hangar 13's writers deserve some respect for playing it straight and not trying to dress up this overly familiar mobster tale with meta-textual humor, an excess of gore or anything else that would distract from the story's generic but endearingly earnest take on the genre. And while the third-person action is as traditional as they come, the linear mission design at least produces a fair amount of atmospheric moments, such as the suspenseful shootout at the farm featured in this video.
