This is our game sample for Maken X, where you get to see how the fighting operates. Maken X uses a first-person perspective while fighting and a third-person perspective during cutscenes. Moving in the game is a bit cumbersome and requires some practice.

You can move around normally with the direction/analog control, slash folks and do various manuevers to avoid being damaged. You can also strafe sorta, but you have to get the direction you want to face and then hold down the right trigger. It's not like some games that effectively let you move and strafe more freely because you can't strafe at all if you're not moving (where as strafing normally makes you move to the left or right with a simple button press).

However, this game has a lock-on system that is pretty handy because it allows you to circle an enemy without using the right trigger to move your way around and keep them in sight, which helps for many (but not all) situations.

You can also jump over many enemies and attack them from behind, critically wounding them. You have a charge attack which takes a small amount of your life to execute, but it's usually powerful. As you progress further in the game, you can build your rank and increase in power, but you can also "Brainjack" (Brain Jack), which allows you to gain control of another character's body and abilities.

The missions are pretty simple and the characters are interesting, like many of the odd lot that Atlus produces, but this game is more about the story than the fighting. That reminds me; This game has seven endings... but you can't skip the cutscenes, which forces you to watch ones you've already seen every single time (unless you feel like reserving a whole VMU for the game). Overall, it's a decent game. Enjoy.
