Manjaro is a desktop-oriented operating system based on Arch Linux. Manjaro is focused on ease of use and the system itself is designed to work completely โout of the boxโ with its array of pre-installed software.
Developed in Austria, France and Germany, Manjaro offers all the benefits of the Arch Linux operating system combined with a focus on ease of use and accessibility.
Manjaro follows Arch Linux and officially only offers a 64-bit version. Manjaro is suitable for both beginners and experienced Linux users.
The Manjaro team has made Arch Linux available to everyone, novice or professional, and as it carries all the benefits of Arch Linux with it, more people can now access the wonders of Arch Linux through Manjaro.
Manjaro is in a continuous release cycle, so you never need to download a new version of Manjaro or worry about your current installation reaching the end of its useful life.
Keeping Manjaro up to date can be done with a few clicks via the GUI or a few keystrokes via the command line and is very simple to do.
History
Manjaro was released on July 10, 2011. As of mid-2013, Manjaro was in the beta stage, although key elements of the final system had been implemented, such as:
GUI installer
Package manager (Pacman) with your choice of front-ends: Pamac (GTK) and Octopi (QT)
Manjaro Hardware Detection, for detection of free and proprietary video drivers
Manjaro Settings Manager
GNOME Shell support was dropped with the release of version 0.8.3 in 2012. An official release that offered the GNOME desktop environment was reinstated in March 2017.
What are the differences between Manjaro and Arch Linux?
Manjaro is not Arch Linux in the pure sense โ rather, it is based on Arch Linux fundamentals and Arch Linux principles. As a result, it inherits many features from Arch Linux, but it also implements many unique features.
Nor is using Manjaro the same as using pure Arch Linux or more direct derivatives. Although Manjaro is based on Arch and compatible with Arch, it is not Arch Linux.
As such, far from being just an easy-to-install or pre-configured version of Arch Linux, Manjaro is actually a very different kind of animal.
In fact, the differences between Manjaro and Arch Linux are far greater than the differences between the popular Ubuntu distribution and its many derivatives, including Mint and Zorin.
To help provide a clearer understanding of Manjaro, some of its key features have been described.
Developed independently of Arch Linux and by a completely different team.
Designed to be accessible to novices, while Arch Linux is aimed at experienced users.
It extracts software from its own independent repositories. These repositories also contain software packages not provided by Arch Linux.
It provides its own distribution-specific tools, such as the Manjaro Hardware Detection (mhwd) utility and the Manjaro Settings Manager (msm).
It has numerous subtle differences in how it works when compared to Arch.
Manjaro Editions
The official editions of Manjaro are based on:
XFCE
KDE
gnome
Architect (Cinnamon)
