I don't know what else to call this, but I was specifically requested to make a tutorial for this so here it is. I decided to give a few options based on the scenarios, but watching this back I feel I really did not do a good job showing how useful the subdivision methods can be for background cliffs in particular since you don't have to apply the subdivision modifier until you're absolutely ready to and can just keep making minor adjustments while still maintaining a smooth wall.
