Ryu's treatment in Marvel vs. Capcom 1 is probably the most unique out of all his other appearances in the entire Capcom vs. series, and even his own Street Fighter series as well.

His sprites are based on his appearances in the Street Fighter Alpha subseries, but he's recolored and revoiced to resemble his older Street Fighter II appearance. This version of Ryu is actually himself during the Street Fighter III subseries. The one sole factor of this is how Sean from those games appears in one of Ryu's starting animations, as well as his ending. The mid-length-haired Ken also appears alongside Sean in these situations.

What's strange about this is that he uses his younger Alpha self in the two games before this one (X-Men vs. Street Fighter & Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter), AND he reverts BACK to that incarnation in Marvel vs. Capcom 2. Everything beyond THAT game gives him more of a Street Fighter IV appearance.

Another thing Ryu can do exclusively in this game is that he can change his style and transform himself into fighting just like either Ken or Akuma in their tweaked Alpha forms in the previous games. He gains all of their moves and even the color of their clothes. Yes, this even includes Akuma's Shun Goku Satsu.

I guess this was done to make up for the playable lack of those two guys in this game, but at the same time, it makes Ryu much, MUCH more versatile than he ever will be again.

--------------

Before the likes of Ryu & Mega Man, it was Captain Commando who took the helm as Capcom's mascot, it's even in his name, "Cap"tain "Com"mando!

He attacks with a few weapons on his clothes, which are unleashed in his normal and special moves, such as the Captain Fire, Captain Kick, and the Captain Corridor (CAPTAIN COLLIDAH!), one special move in particular that is the best anti-air move in the game.

CapCom can also summon his own comrades for special move assists. They are Sho, the ninja, Jennety, the mummy, and Hoover, the mech-wielding baby.

Together, these four make up the main characters of the Captain Commando games, and here, they band together during both of CapCom's Super Combos.

--------------

I didn't intend to do this, but before I fought Gambit & Hulk in Stage 7, I triggered a secret event where I get to fight the Gold War Machine, Captain America being partnered with him for filler.

According to GameFAQs, to fight the Gold War Machine, you have to get a First Attack in all stages and a Team Attack finish in at least four rounds, all while not losing one of your two characters at any point up until the secret battle.

Gold War Machine is much stronger than the regular War Machine, and he can't be flinched at all, but he moves around much slower and and his jumps are so much heavier that he can't even fly.

Defeat him to earn bragging rights for beating him, and remember that you can also play as him through a secret code. GERONIMO!

--------------

I failed only once to beat Onslaught here, so I try again and then beat him from there with Ryu.

Ryu's ending has him further train and hone his moves, while Ken & Sean watch him. Sean's excited to become Ryu's student, and Ken, his previous teacher, lets him do that while Ken heads out to go shopping with Eliza.

Ryu himself is proud and eager to take up Sean as his new student.
