Making Renegade choices in Mass Effect 1's ending is a deliciously Machiavellian activity, and it really brings forth the creepy totalitarian undertones in the human-centric world view which serves as a fascinating counterpoint to the more straightforward Kumbaya mentality of the Paragon path. Nowadays Bioware is often criticized for rigid and binary morality systems in their RPGs, but the benefit of having two clearly defined perspectives (as opposed to the endless shades of "damned if you do, damned if you don't" greys in a game like The Walking Dead) is that, if done right, there can actually be more room for philosophical and ideological reflection on part of the player. In the case of Mass Effect, the Renegade path isn't exactly evil in any traditional sense and at its best it represents an entirely legitimate (if myopic, stubborn and depressingly pessimistic) approach to international/-galactical relations rather than, say, the intrinsic causeless nastiness of a run-of-the-mill cartoon villain.
