For whatever reason, Tomb Raider Legend is a lot more *fun* than what little I remember from its sequel Underworld. It's clear that Crystal Dynamics first reboot of the series - while not nearly as radical as what they're doing in 2013 - represented an attempt to make Tomb Raider more cinematic, exciting and action-oriented while still retaining some of the puzzles and exploration which used to define the Core Design games. Although I'm not an expert on the earlier Tomb Raider games, it could perhaps be said that Crystal D tried to go in the new direction which Core D wanted to take the franchise in but never pulled off successfully. Legend's gunplay is rather horrible (in a PlayStation 2 third-person shooter kind of way) and the movement controls still hasn't lost all of the mechanical rigidity and maddening lack of precision which characterized the not-very-agile Lara Croft of the TR1-6 era, but I can certainly appreciate the effort made to bring the gameplay up to modern standards. Also, Troels Folmann's sweeping score is very nice and the excellent British actress Keeley Hawes does an admirable job with an inherently hopeless character.
