Math for Everyone: Fun with Binomials!
0The binomial coefficients are coefficients of the various powers of the binomial 1 + x. They have amazing properties, including being connected to the Fibonacci sequence, one of the most famous sequences in mathematics and in nature, where each number is the sum of the two numbers that precede it. The talk will assume no background beyond high school algebra.
Bruce Sagan got his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 1979. He has written more than 100 papers and has given more than 200 talks at various conferences and universities. When he is not doing mathematics, he plays folk music from various countries in Europe on the fiddle, and other ethnic instruments that have strings and bows.
