0Shortly after waking up in the hospital and finding Winterson's corpse in the building's morgue, Max finds himself on the run as Cleaners enter the hospital with the explicit objective of killing Max before he can escape. Despite their efforts, Max manages to fight his way out and with no other recourse, decides to pay a personal visit to Alfred Woden in order to learn why are Inner Circle-affiliated assassins after him and Mona. As he asks him, Max learns that a splinter faction has risen within Inner Circle and in consolidation of its power within the organization, has started killing anyone who is willing or powerful enough to oppose them, explaining the assassination of Mona's contact within Inner Circle earlier that night. Woden also reveals that he himself cannot effectively control Inner Circle anymore since he is dying from cancer and that the splinter faction has used this fact to start consolidating itself and that the renegade Inner Circle member responsible for the chaos that has unfolded over the course of the night and the leader of the Cleaners is in fact Vladimir Lem, who has apparently been the Inner Circle member for years with Woden himself having been his one-time mentor. Aware that Vladimir is using the Inner Circle's resources to wage a gang war against Vinnie Gognitti and his crew, Woden also tells Max that Vladimir will aim to end the war in his favor by killing Gognitti before coming after him to fully cement his reign as the new leader of the Inner Circle...
