Mazinger Z, 1994 Banpresto
Vertically scrolling shmup based on the MAZINGER Z manga/tv series/movies. Originally created by Go Nagai for manga in 1972, this is an origination of the mecha genre and involves a professor creating giant robots piloted by humans to save the earth from the machinations of the evil Dr. Hell (!). In tradition with the trappings of most shmups, you can upgrade your weapons by collecting colored icons like spread rapid fire (green), multi-way shot (blue), and straight powerful shot (red). You can also collect red jet packs that increase your speed, bonus point icons (the points added up at the end of the stage), an extra bomb (secondary attack), and a life meter restoration block. Your life bar consists of 3 blocks-- when they are out, you don't have any more lives! You must spend a continue. Sucks.. the game is pretty easy for the first couple of stages, and then on the difficulty really starts to kick in. You can choose from 3 different robots: Mazinger Z, Great Mazinger and Grendizer. I think maybe I prefer the first and last-- though some have better powered up attacks/bombs/charged shots (yes, you can charge your shot for a couple seconds, then release for a stronger shot) than others 8 stages of enemy robots/airships/tanks/cannons/etc. await, and you must beat them all twice to get the true ending (which isn't all that special). In fact, the game itself isn't terribly special unless you're a big fan of Mazonger Z (which I'm not, since I've never really watched/read it). Suggested by YouTube user Namcotenterprises.
