Finest Hour, 1989 Namco
Unbelievably awful run and gun game in which you control a mecha scrolling to the right, destroying all mechanical and organic enemies on alien terrain. Sounds cool, but that is really all there is to the game. You get NO power ups to your weapon, which really cripples any fun right there. You can double tap the joystick to run (and you must do this sometimes to keep from running out of time-- you must reach the far end of a level to advance), you have a jet pack to jump and fly short distances with (useful for jumping over a mini-boss or other annoying enemies you don't really have to deal with), and you must watch the temperature gauge that fills up as you take damage from enemies. When that meter is full you will break down and must spend a continue or you'll be blown up and it's game over. If your time runs out, your coolant will be disabled and your temperature gauge will fill up bit by bit! Unless you're close to the end of the area you're in BIG trouble! On rounds where you have lots of time, you can afford to inch forward until enemies appear and blast them, or loiter while your temperature gauge cools back down. But most stages have a less forgiving timer and you'll need to dash forward and rely on the jet pack to fly you out of a major firefight. Collision with an enemy can be FAR more damaging than taking fire from them-- speaking of which, ducking may save your bacon in this instance (sometimes it doesn't and enemies can still hit you). One cool thing about this game is that the round names are based on songs from the band RUSH (the programmers must have been fans)! After passing 4 full rounds (some kind of repeat), you will need to repeat them ALL OVER AGAIN (whee) to get the ending scenario littered with Engrish. A boss fight awaits at the end of the 4th round, and you must face some large control panel with various sensors you must shoot.. it's hard to tell what you need to shoot when there are multiple enemies at once and your automatic crosshairs move to the different enemies but not where you want to shoot! After destroying the panel you must face a giant robot and its different forms. If you ever get lost and aren't sure which direction to go look for the arrows in the lower right to tell you. Or just walk away from this crappy game. Finest Hour my ass! Suggested by YouTube user Namcotenterprises.
