SubRoc-3D, 1982 Sega
Interesting hybrid submarine and flying first person perspective shooter. You can fly your vehicle down all the way and touch the surface of the sea, where you can fire torpedoes at the enemy subs/battleships/etc., and you can fly your vehicle higher and take on enemies in the air (UFOs, jets, etc.) and fire at them with regular shots. Either air or sea, though; you can only shoot 2 shots at a time, which is bogus especially if you've played Sub Roc's "sister" game, Buck Rogers: Planet Of Zoom (which is way better), where you can shoot several shots at once IIRC. Enemy projectiles can often miss you (favorable collision detection also found in Buck Rogers), but the odd can-shaped projectiles are the hardest to avoid. Regular enemy missiles or torpedoes can be shot (as can the "can"s) but the swirling fireball-like things cannot be canceled out with your shots. On occasion an enemy will be worth bonus points, and is usually hard to hit or very far away; these can include pirate ships or hot-air balloons! After a certain amount of enemies have made their presence known and you've dispatched of the last ones, a boss fight will take place; it's really pretty easy. The graphics in MAME in this part may not be correct.. there is a sort of crosshairs-type of marker that doesn't really have any bearing on the fight-- just shoot the enemy when he swoops into your line of fire. Any bonus points remaining on the timer will be added to your score when you shoot him. I can't offer too many tips, other than don't stay still! Don't fire like crazy since you can only fire 2 shots at a time. And try to waste the boss as quickly as you can, since that's one of the better sources of points-- a healthy amount of time left on your bonus timer. The special bonus targets aren't really worth that much-- generally around 2,000 to maybe a little over 3,000. One extra life awarded at 80,000. Suggested by YouTube user Nathan Williams.
