Mega Man X7 (via Legacy Collection) playthrough Part 2
0Nearly every decision in the design of this game was awful. The characters can only get power ups if they're active. But the character that the fans WANT to play, the character the series is literally named after, isn't playable for half the game. So you really CAN'T power him up like the rest. You can't move or delay the power ups. Only activate them when you get the chance. So unless you manage to avoid the power ups while collecting enough to get the character, you're screwed.
Even beyond that, the decisions in this game are baffling. Zero, the character with the sword, has an attack that makes him dash forward. Sword. So you're generally swinging it in close proximity to the enemy. So that dash forward forces you into the enemy where you take damage. Or you're on a cliff, which it dives you right off of. The stages are poorly designed for 3D, and shouldn't be in 3D anyway because Mega Man has always been a 2D platformer. "But games can evolve," sure, they can. But that evolution has to be done carefully, and is full of pitfalls. Even some games that did make the transition well had growing pains that, when you look back on them now, are more painful than ever. But this was just bad from the beginning. Uninspired levels, frustrating boss design, nothing in this game feels good to play.
And this is why fans of this beloved series are so starved for content that they backed a Kickstarter through the roof for the failed hopes of recreating this feeling. Because Capcom, when they DID give games, didn't even care about the games they gave. It hurts to be a fan of Capcom's IPs sometimes. -- Watch live at https://www.twitch.tv/the_nametag
