With one game of the trilogy complete, it's time to see how the second leg of the journey plays out.

So, what do the maverick hunters get to go investigate this time? Meteorites crashing near some kind of facility!

There's a few changes compared to how the first game began. First, you can select either X or Zero before entering any stage. Nothing changes aside from who you control during a stage so pick whomever you wish.

Secondly, the Shift button now lets you dash forward. You won't be able to dash through any enemies in your path, but this is still nice to cut down on traveling time between battles.

Finally, Zero is going to be the superior fighter for this stage and the next two. He's got a significant attack power lead over X, his Z-Cannon skill costs 5 WE and does a very nice amount of damage, and his hp/we totals will be a pinch higher. Doesn't matter that he needs more exp to level than X because that extra exp required amounts to 10 * his current level (assuming both characters at an equal level).

That all being said, the intro stage is not to be taken lightly. The enemies don't hit too hard, but they're very durable. Usually takes 3 attacks to drop something. As such, it's best to use the two S-Tanks you find in this stage when the duo is out of WE and running low enough on hp that they'll be unlikely to survive the next battle. That way, you can save the refilled WE for the boss of this stage.

Speaking of the boss, when the duo makes it to the end to see the impact sites, a few..."friends" warp in. Those friends are none other than Colonel (guy with the sword in the back), Double (The small rotund guy in front) and...

...Iris.

Yes, that Iris. Zero is very understandably shocked and surprised by this. Iris tries to get Zero to come with her, but it fails thanks to X pretty much seeing through this ruse knowing full well it's a trap by her.

As for the rest? They were revived so they can get another crack at revenge with the earth set to be wiped out by a new wave of resurrected mavericks that come in on a second set of meteorites that crash down (Colonel & the gang came in on that first wave of meteorites).

After the Repliforce trio warp out, the designated boss of the intro stage, a robot who just so happened to be X6's intro stage boss, comes in wanting a rematch.

Nothing real special about this boss. Attacks that hit both party members for around 20-30 damage each seem a bit concerning, but only if you have to pop a heal of some kind due to being very low on hp going into the battle. If X & Zero have full WE and are at 50% or so hp, you can blow through the mecha before you have to worry about either character kicking off.

After the battle and back at the hunter base, everyone's trying to make sense of the Repliforce being revived....well, everyone except Zero that is. He's dead set in his own mind about wanting to save Iris when the time's right.

Next thing you know...alarm sounds, a rad kickin' song fires up, and mavericks are on the prowl. Time for another cleansing, maverick hunter style!

As for options on the stage select screen, they remain the same as in the previous game except for a few new things added to the shop. There's another weapon for Zero that's weaker than the Fire Saber, but less expensive obviously. More importantly, X now has some weapons to possibly take advantage of.

Finally...take a look at the first five mavericks you see. If you've played the original version of this game, you may notice that Crystal Snail is not here. In his place, Storm Owl from X4. Incidentally enough, his stage has the easiest ranking difficulty wise.

Next time, Storm Owl gets payed a visit.
