Here's a clip of when I earned the Platinum Trophy in Mercenary Kings on Playstation 4. Read more...

I saved a predictable trophy (Craftsmanship; where you must "Craft over 100 knives and 300 gun parts.") for last so I could record it.

This game is commonly compared to Metal Slug. If you liked that game, you will probably enjoy this one as well. I never had that experience. This game is a side-scrolling 2d shooter with up to 4-player online/offline coop. The game is simplistic, but offered a fair amount of enjoyment and challenge.

Story
-------------------------------
This game didn't offer much value in terms of story. There were no voice actors (except the guy that said "Mercenary Kings", "Mission Complete", or "Mission Failed"). The story is delivered via short cutscenes and textual sequences. I found myself rather bored with the story and skipped many of those sequences to simply continue playing the game. I get the premise of the story and it was interesting enough... it just wasn't delivered properly IMO. It did however, fit the theme of the retro game's style. There are 112 levels to conquer (most of which you will be playing 2+ times each). Your first playthrough of each mission will be learning the map layout and enemies present while your second run will be for speed. I experienced several issues while playing that game such as the game crashing and lag/framerate drops (even in single player). I found this peculiar due to the game's simplistic graphics, AI, and repetitive soundtrack. The quality of the programming just seemed sub par for the end result of the game.

Difficulty
-------------------------------
There is only one difficulty in the game (not selectable). For the most part, the game isn't very difficult, but the trophy requirements were. Once you start unlocking weapon parts and find enough materials to experiment, the game isn't too tough until the last couple ranks. Some of those boss fights were a real pain for me... until I started using the "invincibility glitch". I know, it's pretty lame. I'm sure I would have done it all legit eventually, but I don't regret using it for the simple fact that it probably saved me hours of repetitive gameplay.

Multiplayer
-------------------------------
There are no trophies that specifically require multiplayer, but a few of the speed runs can be made much easier with the help of some friends. The invite system was slightly goofy and required the use of the PS4 OS; there was in in-game invite/party system. I never used the chat (if there is one) because we utilized the Party Chat on PS4. I honestly felt that, in many cases, the game was harder with a team. There were minor lag issues and I always felt a little rushed when playing with friends... no idea why that is though :\

Trophies
-------------------------------
The trophy list on this game is fairly short, but don't let that fool you. The road to platinum was not very short. While I have played longer games, this one has some fairly hefty requirements in terms of trophies. My overall time in the game was a little over 60 hours and I didn't dick around too awful much.

There will be hours of repetitive gameplay... and it gets a little repetitive fairly quickly. Be prepared for material grinding. Overall, though, the game was pretty fun and I would recommend it.

Platinum Difficulty: 6/10
Overall Enjoyment: 7/10
