Here's a walkthrough of me going through Metroid II: Return of Samus for the Game Boy. I am going for 100% pickups and am trying to beat it with the best ending. There is no sequence breaking in this game, as you can't get the main items out of order, but you can get a couple expansions early.

I explore the area, finding a shaft that leads to every beam in the game. I decide to just stay with the Plasma Beam. I go through the annoying invisible maze to find another Missile Expansions as well as an Energy Tank. I then fight a Zeta Metroid for the first time, where defeating it lets me obtain the Screw Attack.
