Before the final confrontation in Tourian, it is best to fully restock because the number of missiles required and the amount of energy needed is really unpredictable with both the Metroids and Mother Brain's Chamber. I intentionally left out the last Energy Tank near the game's starting point in Brinstar because it is the easiest way to fully heal without having to continually killing enemies in spawning pipes and pools. Speaking of which I shouldn't have relied on the re-spawning Zebs (Flying beetles) to refill my missile stock since they gave me literally nothing and wasted quite a bit of time. Enemy refill drops feel more random than in later games whereas if you have full health, missiles, super missiles or power bombs, then enemies will not drop them.
