About Game: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker is 2010 stealth action-adventure video game developed by Kojima Productions and published by Konami, initially being released for PSP before being ported to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2012. It is seventh mainline game in Metal Gear series and is considered to be an official sequel to 2004's Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater due to questionable canon status of its PSP-exclusive predecessor, 2006's Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops. Upon release, this game was met with critical acclaim although it was more popular in Japan than in the rest of the world, particularly its PSP version whose relatively poor sales in Europe and North America were blamed for the game's general under performance on the sales market. Despite this, Peace Walker was popular enough to ensure the future for Metal Gear series, having even won several official and unofficial awards, including "Best PSP game" on 2009 Tokyo Game Show and placement on the list of the best PSP games of 2010 created by IGN in addition to several others.
Story of the game takes place in November 1974, ten years after the events of MGS3 and follows Big Boss who has left the United States and relocated to Colombia where he runs his own private army known as Militaires Sans Frontieres alongside a man named Kazuhira Miller.
One evening, while training with his soldiers, Big Boss is found by Miller who takes him back to MSF's compound where two people are waiting for him; a man and 16-year old girl. Man introduces himself as Ramon Galvez Mena, a professor from UN's University for Peace of Costa Rica while the girl is his student, Paz Ortega Andrade. They reveal that they sought Big Boss and MSF out in order to hire them to go to Costa Rica and investigate the mysterious group of mercenaries that has recently come to the country and are backed by CIA, their primary reasons for doing so being both the fact that they kidnapped Paz's young friend while Paz herself escaped with Galvez and the fact that Costa Rican government cannot investigate them as they have no military resources to spare due to the country's pacifist policy that officially prohibits formation of armed forces, offering to pay MSF with a new FOB aboard an abandoned offshore platform in Caribbean sea. However, Big Boss immediately realizes that Galvez is KGB agent and tries to refuse him, knowing that he'd become targeted by the US government if he were to go against CIA despite Miller being aware that they need a new base. Ultimately, he is persuaded to listen to Galvez who confirms that he really is KGB agent but that Paz has escaped CIA's captivity, also revealing that his objective is to further Soviet Union's interests in Latin America by supporting leftist insurgencies throughout the region in an effort to destabilize US' presence there, current of which is SNLF, Nicaraguan leftist revolutionary organization whose members also operate in Costa Rica and whose primary objective is to topple US-backed Somoza regime in Nicaragua. Galvez continues by producing a tape recorded by Paz's friend shortly before she was captured, revealing two female voices, one of whom belongs to The Boss, Big Boss' former mentor whom he assassinated a decade prior. Aware that it is most likely a trap, Big Boss agrees to the mission regardless, claiming that he wants to do it for Paz's sake.
A week later, Big Boss is dropped off into Puerto Limon, Costa Rica where CIA's agents have set up a supply depot. Upon infiltrating it, Big Boss overhears a radio operator confirming that a cargo, referred to as "spears" has been moved from the depot. Grabbing the operator, Big Boss asks him what the cargo is and where is it headed, learning only that it is headed towards an area in the nearby mountains called Irazu before being forced to knock him out. However, upon noticing that the room is full of radiation badges, Big Boss comes to the horrifying realization; CIA brought nuclear weapons to Costa Rica with their reasons for doing so remaining unknown...
