MGS: Portable Ops Walkthrough Part 20: True Successor (FINAL BOSS FIGHT & ENDING)
Big Boss enters the control room within silo's launch bay and confronts Gene with the fact that he had been played for a fool by Cunningham. However, Gene reveals that he was aware of Cunningham's plan all along and made his own, intending to launch Metal Gear's payload at Pentagon and Langley, his intention being to collapse United States into anarchy while USSR would end up weakened diplomatically and disgraced at the world stage since San Hieronymo houses their secret nuclear facility. Gene's ultimate objective with this is to end the Cold War by collapsing two of world's superpowers which would end up causing essentially an unstoppable war in the countries of the Third World whose political stability hinges either on the United States or Soviet Union, a chaotic world in which his military nation, dubbed "Army Heaven", would hold significant sway as its soldiers could thrive through the state of constant conflict which would supposedly make the wold whole according to The Boss' wish, also revealing that someone within US government engineered operation Snake Eater by manipulating Volgin into firing nuclear shell at Sokolov's research facility but refuses to tell Big Boss who it was. As Gene prepares to start Metal Gear's launch protocol, the control console suddenly explodes with the culprit being revealed as Ursula/Elisa who reveals her hatred for nuclear weapons due to their extremely destructive power. Gene proceeds to use his increased reflexes to stab her, mortally wounding her before moving into next room where a backup launch mechanism is located. As she dies, Elisa regains control over herself, using the last of her strength to cryptically tell Big Boss that he will destroy Metal Gear only to replace it and that his sons whom she refers to as "Les Enfants Terribles" will both destroy and save the world, passing away immediately afterwards. As he follows Gene into the adjacent control room, Big Boss is challenged to a final fight to the death to determine which one of them is The Boss' real successor with the fight ending with mortally wounded Gene finally admitting defeat and giving Big Boss a microfilm containing all information and resources needed to start a military nation, having done it knowing that him and Big Boss share same convictions before passing away. With Metal Gear in launch mode and no way to abort it, Sokolov urges Big Boss to shoot the weapon's launch module in order to hopefully destroy its payload before it can be launched with the remaining Soviet troops who witnessed Big Boss' attempt to stop the launch helping him by shooting at Metal Gear. However, despite their efforts, payload is launched with Big Boss ending up knocked out after he fired an RPG missile at the payload in an last-ditch effort to stop it from launching. Due to this, payload is destroyed in mid-air, preventing a nuclear strike on the United States.
Meanwhile, believing that the nuclear strike at Langley is inevitable, director of the CIA prepares to escape to safety, carrying the documents concerning the Philosophers so that they could be rebuilt in case the United States end up nuked. However, him and his security detail are intercepted by Ocelot who quickly kills the director's security before revealing his intention of dismantling the Philosophers in order to centralize them in the United States and rebrand them as the Patriots, proceeding to kill the director as well immediately afterwards.
Upon returning to the United States, Big Boss realizes that his purpose is to fight and using the resources given to him by Gene, decides to restart his attempt at the military nation under his own leadership.
Meanwhile, Ocelot is contacted by his mysterious employer and upon learning of his success with acquiring the Philosophers' documents, is asked to take part in a genetic project, a proposition which Ocelot accepts but only under the condition that Big Boss participates as well...
