Almost 700 military wives and girlfriends descended on Wellington Barracks in London earlier today for the launch of the Military Wives Choir Foundation.

It has been set up to support the choirs that have been springing up in garrisons around the world since the programme The Choir: Military Wives aired last year.

They also announced the launch of their new album 'Stronger Together'.

The first choir was formed by Gareth Malone at the Royal Marine's Base Chivenor last year and was documented for a BBC programme. At the start of this year there were just five choirs but they have become so popular there are now more than 50.

The Military Wives Choirs Foundation has been set up to support the expanding network of choirs that now includes groups from Cyprus and Germany. It is backed by SSAFA.

It has been a year of firsts for this army of choristers who will find out next month if they can add a classical Brit award to their list of achievements for their single "Wherever You Are".
