Minecraft 1.4.6 has many types of mods (including the Optifine Mod) that help enrich the experience of the game. The Optifine Mod actually allows for quite a few things to run more smoothly.

Minecraft 1.4.6 Optifine Mod allows for HD textures packs to be selected and switched directly within the menu system, as well as increasing your frames per second. I personally experienced an FPS gain of over 2x when recording which makes it possible for me to record at 720p or even 1080p if need be with high frames. With Optifine, you can easily increase your FPS by 20 frames per second.
In this How to Install Optifine Mod Tutorial, I'll show you the steps needed to prepare and install without the need of any other mods. I go over tips on some of the things you may experience with installing the Optifine Mod (like issues with the appdata folder in Windows 7).
The Optifine Mod gives you higher flexibility and control over many of the aspects of the game, right down to the animations and overall performance. You can control the day and night cycle (in Singleplayer), change the quality of specific aspects of the game to help reduce lag, and even turn off the laggy affects of weather.
Keep in mind that when installing optifine mod, you need to install the version that corresponds with your minecraft version. You cannot install Optifine 1.4.6 on Minecraft 1.4.7 or Minecraft 1.5.0
For best overall performance you'll want to tweak Optifine a bit to suit your needs. Some of the recommended settings include:
- Graphics: Fast
- Smooth Lighting: OFF
- Performance: Max FPS
- AdvancedOpenGL: Fast
- Clouds: OFF
- Fog: OFF
- Animations: All OFF
- Sky: OFF
- Stars: OFF
- Weather: Off
You can dig further into the settings and turn off specific elements like torch particles and more. Optifine Mod is a great way to have full control over your minecraft while giving you the FPS boost that you need. Its dynamic chunk loading is also very useful as it helps transition you between chunks and renders them faster.
Minecraft 1.4.6 was released in Middle of December 2012 and is a great addition to the Minecraft family with lots of great possibilities coming up.
