MiSTer FPGA - Devilish (バッドオーメン) / Genesis (Mega Drive)
Another Halloween Genesis game today, and again with an odd aspect ratio that I used correction to present properly. (Details below) Even on CRT you could not get the graphics "correct" in these games, so it's nice to show them in a way that is beneficial to the overall graphical presentation here.
Narrow HV Integer is used to get the 256 pixel mode graphics correct in this one. Otherwise the ball is oval and other graphical elements seem off as well, like the bricks being rectangle instead of square. This may be because of the roots of the game being on Game Gear, but I'm not certain.
The always-insightful FirebrandX made a list of Genesis games that use this odd resolution:

This game is a really neat concept, but the execution is a bit lacking. The ball will often go right through the paddles and other objects, so learning to deal with the controls and avoid this takes a bit of trial and error. Running out of time and having to restart a level (even after beating the boss!) can be quite frustrating also.
The speed at which the game plays is highly variable, which seems tied to the ball physics. This is hinted at by the game ramping up in speed quite dramatically whenever the ball is frozen or captured momentarily. If you'd like to alleviate this variable speed, set 'CPU Turbo: High' for smoother gameplay, though it can be a bit more challenging sometimes without slowdown. Often I feel it made things easier without the variable slowdown though.
This game supports co-op where each player can control one of the paddles independently! I didn't have a chance to try this, but will hopefully have a chance to in the future. Really neat twist on the standard Breakout gameplay here. Well worth trying out, if the at-times wonky physics don't bother you too much.
Fans of Breakout/Arkanoid style games should also give Hypernoid for Neo Geo a try! It's a fantastic homebrew game that just released earlier in 2021. Well worth the $6 asking price.
