MiSTer FPGA - Wade Hixton's Counter Punch / Game Boy Advance
Counter Punch is a unique GBA game, having never been ported to any other platform that I'm aware of. It's also a rather unique take on the classic Punch-Out boxing formula, featuring a diverse cast of opponents to brawl with across the town of Big Piney. Never thought I would play a game where a redneck who's main skills are boxing and fixing stuff with duct tape, would brawl with random girls at raves and call in the town's mechanic to throw a monkey wrench at her head mid-fight, but here it is. 😂
Some good fun to be had here for fans of Punch-Out, but damn the difficulty completely goes off a cliff when you get to the boss fight. It seems downright impossible when you first are attempting to get through, and nullifies a bunch of the strategies you may have relied upon up to this point. This is probably the weakest point in the game besides the relatively low amount of opponents. These kind of go hand-in-hand though, as I feel 3 or 4 more fights leading up to the finale' could have provided a more appropriate ramp-up to the difficulty of that final fight.
The main thing you want to focus on is dodging enemy attacks effectively- generally in the direction the attack is coming from. This gives you the opening to land a 4-piece combo consistently, and later in the game when you buy the special counter-attack technique from the back alley, you can put this to use in a similar timing to land a 3-piece combo also. If you're having problems consistently doing the counter, remember to *HOLD* Up+A in the last movement. The game doesn't tell you this.
For standard power-up techniques, train at the gym instead of the "arcadium", as these techniques are *much* more useful, and do considerably more damage. When you've trained all the techniques at the gym, then perhaps is a good time to get the other techniques if you want to spice things up a bit in your fights. The kid at the arcadium is the "Alpha Street Puncher 2 Turbo: Champion Edition Part 3" champ, after all. 😂
