MiSTer FPGA - Ghostbusters [No Miss] / Genesis (Mega Drive)
Uniform color romhack (closer match to movies): https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/2130/
Now this is a very odd one. Finally we have a Ghostbusters game that's not based on the C64 classic, and it's by legendary Japanese game studio Compile! I'd have to say this is the best 8/16-bit Ghostbusters game I've played. It seems pretty tame for a Compile game, having only taken 4 or 5 tries to get a no miss (no death) clear for me. Pixel art is excellent, with instantly recognizable caricatures of the actors. Strangely, Winston is completely missing here. Not even a mention.
The game has some quirks that I wanted to note. First, the game uses the Genesis 320 display mode, and this makes the aspect ratio a bit wonky by default. This is instantly recognizable on the title screen with the Ghostbusters logo being obviously oval-shaped. Switching the menu option for "320x224 Aspect" to "Corrected" will fix this, and enhances the overall presentation of the game.
Next oddity I encountered is with the scrolling in the game. Originally I wanted to play as Bill Murray/Peter Venkman, but as I played the game and watched the scrolling on my capture card, I noticed that it is never smooth if you pick him! In fact, the only way to get perfectly smooth scrolling in the game is by picking Ray! I can only guess that the inclusion of different character stats for walking speed and defense were added to the game late into development, thus requiring some hacky workarounds with background scrolling speed to make these differences later on.
Another thing to note, is that although Ray does walk a bit slower than Peter, this is negated by the crawl speed of the character, which is actually faster for Ray. This makes Ray an obvious pick for the best character in the game, having both great defense and good movement speed if you utilize crawling to dodge or get through tricky situations more often.
Spread shot is the best weapon. It uses very little energy and has great coverage, making it useful in almost all situations. Other weapons are highly situational and you'd be better off increasing your energy storage before getting them. Bombs are nearly useless, but cheap enough that you should always restock them. They can definitely help out in a pinch on rare occasions.
