MiSTer FPGA - Lords of Thunder (ウィンズ オブ サンダー) [No Miss] / Turbografx CD (PC Engine CD)
*NOTE* - Slight stutter at start of stage 1 because of OBS/capture card issues- not game issue!
This one has been suggested/requested multiple times over the years, and I'm finally getting around to playing it my first time this past couple days. Made it to the boss my first day of attempts but was not able to beat him. I reviewed the video of my last run from yesterday and came back with a no miss on my first try today! The key I found is saving up money and not burning it on extra continues at the item shop. I came into the boss fight with defensive items and elixir this time, and made short work of him.
This game is pretty damn fun. Rockin' soundtrack really gets you pumped for the stages, and it felt perfect to play through with a nice octo-gate arcade stick. I found some pretty good use for three of the armor types, but the Wind armor seemed a bit lackluster to me. I always seemed to die more often when choosing it, so I stuck to the other three for the various stages during my run.
For SHMUP veterans this is a rather easy playthrough, only requiring a bit of trial and error with the bosses your first encounter with them mainly. After you get a feel for the bosses and the timing for bomb/elemental usage, its kind of a walk in the park. Adept players should definitely start with the harder difficulty option if they are looking for a challenge here.
Not sure how this one stacks up to Gate of Thunder as I haven't played it yet, but I had a lot of fun with this playthrough! Excellent use of the system's palette with tons of sprites on screen at the same time. Often times there is so much stuff floating around on the screen that it can be distracting. It took a while for me to get used to this. I don't really like it when SHMUP games litter the playfield constantly with money/point items like this. It really comes across as an unnecessary distraction at times, both visually and audibly, since you hear a little chime noise constantly throughout the game whenever picking them up also.
I used the "extra sprites" feature of the core to reduce flicker. There isn't a lot of flicker in the game, but it helps clean it up a bit all the same. 5x scaling works well in this game also, but I decided to record without it since it does cut off a few rows.
MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES and Sega CD cores, and is now currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.
