MiSTer FPGA - Friday the 13th / NES (Famicom)
0This is a pretty unique NES game that has you taking control of any of 6 camp counselors with varying stats to try and defeat Jason Voorhees, who has been preying on the kids and counselors around the campground. The game was very popular when it released, even though it was pretty much universally panned by critics at the time. It's actually a decent puzzle/action/survival-horror game, with numerous ways to go about taking on the challenge at hand. An odd gameplay element is how jumping makes you search the immediate area and any items you find will pop up on the screen. You'll want to avoid doing this when you get the better weapons, or you might get stuck with the knife which is pretty much useless against Jason. For this reason, I try and get all searching out of the way early on, and get a nice stockpile of vitamins (look like potions) for extra health.
There's not a lot of content in this one, but it provided some thrills back in the day running into Jason (seemingly..) at random as you travel through the camp. There is actually a path that he sticks to which can be observed through multiple sessions and a lot of trial and error. He always ends up going towards the lake houses where the children are, so if you are unsure where he might be at any given time, you can camp out by the lake entrance (on the left side) and wait for him to show up there.
In this video I use Chrissy- probably the most powerful character out of the bunch since she can not only move fast and jump high, but also gets to equip the armor you can obtain on the second day from Jason's mother in an optional battle. It's not required to do all of this to complete the game, but I wanted to show the alternate boss battles with her that you can take on, which get progressively harder when you return on successive days. The final battle with her on the third day gives you the most powerful weapon in the game- the pitchfork.
