Ahh... they don't make games quite like this anymore... well, they sorta do, but most ingenuity is being placed in somewhat gimmicky motion controls or on mobile phones and download services in the form of cheap indie games... but I digress. Developed by Zoom (creators of Genocide, Lagoon, Zero Divide, etc. / known as "Mr Moskeeto" in Europe and "Ka" in Japan) and published by Eidos' "Fresh Games" label, the strangely named "Mister Mosquito" is a rather unique, slightly perverted game where you play the role of "Mister Mosquito", a "male" blood-sucking mosquito who, over the course of several summers, bring an ordinary Japanese family (the Yamada family) great discomfort but also changes their outlook as a family. The game takes great pride in the symbolism of this male mosquito (which is also known as "You", the player) and its life and death struggle to survive by storing blood to survive the harsh winter months.

Mister Mosquito is special. Besides not simply looking like a normal Mosquito, it also doesn't act like a normal mosquito. You see, male mosquitos are not known for sucking blood; this is a characteristic generally held by "female" mosquitos. You also have to suck blood in some "curious" spots from two of the three members of the Yamada family, namely the 46 year-old mother (Kaneyo Yamada) and 17 year-old daughter (Rena Yamada) like the bottom of their feet, that one place women have below the belt, near their boobs, etc. Other people are also victims, however, poor old Kenichi Yamada isn't the victim of such delibrate "harassment", leaving some to speculate that this is a fetish game that caters to a certain group of individuals. Indeed, it's not for everyone and its controls, camera and physics could use some work (and the voice acting is just awful in a funny sort of way), but it manages to be an entertaining game in spite of its shortcomings and is worthy of a try if, for no other reason, than to experience a game so odd and original that you may never have the privilege to experience anything quite like it again... unless you live in Japan or love to import. A sequel was released only in Japan in 2003 by the name of "Ka 2: Let's Go Hawaii".

The premise of the game is very simple and combines action and stealth. The game is comprised of twelve main levels where you fly around various places tormenting the Yamada family. In these stages, the family members are doing various activities and it's up to you to distract them or get their heart racing which will reveal sensitive spots on your victims from which you can suck blood and put it in containers, storing it for the winter months. Through the course of the game, you can find EX Containers to store more blood (filling them up grants you a special play if you fill them all), find fruits to unlock extras and get item completion, find hearts (get fifty to increase your maximum health), and engage humans in battle if you fail to hide (strike stress points to relax them and gain new colors for Mister Mosquito if you break records). Additionally, the game utilizes "Fine Control" with the right Analog to help move your character while keeping the camera stationary, which helps in some instances. While this is all taking place, you get whimsical story scenes to watch which become progressively more bizarre as you get further and can unlock various goodies.

The graphics aren't particularly special, but the size and scale of characters and your surrounding environments is relatively impressive. The music, what little there is, serves its purpose and provides the game with the appropriate atmosphere. Overall, if you're into the bizarre, I'd give it a try if you can find it. These are videos of the first few levels in high quality showing various things like items, hiding, and battles. Enjoy.
