R-Type Final is an excellent entry in the long-running R-Type series of horizontal old-school shooters, developed by Irem in 2003 and published overseas by Eidos' "Fresh Games" label and Metro3D in 2004. Originally planned as the last game in the R-Type series (which has since been renounced with the release of "R-Type Tactics / Command and R-Type Tactics II" for PSP and "R-Type Dimensions" for X360), Irem wanted the game to go out with a bonafide bang. While the game may not be the final R-Type release, it certainly is a great game with enemies and stages that change based on your skill level, loads of weapons which can be customized to your favorite crafts, a variety of unlockables, multiple endings, and 101 (!!) crafts to collect and use. The game is rounded off with an immersive soundtrack (that suits the game, but is lacking compared to most past R-Type soundtracks) and stylish graphics to make it one of the most ambitious shooters on PS2, and a must-have for almost any R-Type fan.

There isn't really much else to say if you've played R-Type or just about any Hori SHMUP before; you collect power-ups to change your weapons and sub-weapons which help you under different circumstances, grab bits and dozens of different forces to combat enemies with, charge a variety of powerful wave cannons to deal heavy damage to tough foes, and utilize special "Dose" attacks which act as bombs which are charged as your detachable Force Core absorbs bullets and weaker enemies. Taking place several years after the first R-Type, the game details a very simple plot as you progress which discusses current or past events within the R-Type series and the war against the Bydo Empire. The game's ending theme differs between regions.

This is a simple video of the game in action. Enjoy.
