Penguin Wars (or "Penguin-Kun Wars") is a simple competitive action game that was originally released in by UPL for the Arcades in 1985, and was later ported to Game Boy, MSX, and Famicom. The Game Boy game (known as "King of the Zoo" in Europe) was released by ASCII and Nexoft in 1990. A little-known sequel, Penguin Wars 2, was released for MSX in 1988. The game is a combination of "Hot Potato" and "Dodge Ball" where five animals with varying statistics combat each other and try to get the most balls on the opposing players team within a set time limit. After a certain amount of time passes, obstacles appear to make the task more challenging. A "Perfect Game" can be had if you get all ten balls on your opponent's side of the field and if you get two perfect games in a row, you get to play a "Bonus Round" for more points.

The game is comprised of ten games against the four animals you don't pick, with each game becoming more challenging as the computer gets faster, stronger, and cheaper. If you get hit even once, your fate is usually sealed as the computer has pinpoint accuracy and will stun you with balls until they get a perfect game, though the game starts off easily enough. Besides simply tossing the ball, characters can use powerful charge shots, though the usefulness varies with the character. This is a video of the game in action, completing the first set of rounds and showing you that the game loops and becomes a little more challenging. For its time (1985), this would've been a rather engaging game, though they could've added a little more to the GB game. Enjoy.
