Momodora: Reverie Under The Moonlight Boss #08 Archpriestess Choir (No Damage)
Difficulty Played: Hard (Don't have Insane unlocked on PC)
Note: Yes this is my first clear of this boss on Steam, hence the achievement. Does not mean I have not played the game prior.
So, this game is pretty hard when comparing it to other similar titles. It's meant to be unforgiving and force you to learn from your mistakes. You die 20+ times on a boss? Well, it's usually your fault. Learn the patterns, etc.
The only difference in difficulty is your health bar that I've noticed. And, well, more common enemy spawn locations. You do the same amount of damage across difficulties. On Easy it's massive, Normal is more standard size, on Hard, well, you see what it is. On "Insane" it's a little less, almost a sliver. It doesn't matter though, outside of Easy, bosses will kill you in 2-3 hits, except Insane, which is 1 hit kills, pretty much, even with Health Upgrades.
So, why no damage runs on bosses? If you beat a boss without taking damage, they'll drop a special item that usually can't be obtained elsewhere. Or if it can, it costs too much munny.
Something to note, is the game doesn't just register boss damage. There are items you can get later, that take health away to strengthen your attacks. Do NOT use this during the fight, as they count as taking damage and will forfeit your item. Use them before fight triggers.
Anyway, onto the boss. You can fight this optional boss in the Forlorn Monastary, after giving her the Soft Tissue.
So, what are her attacks?
She can spawn four projectiles, which will align around her in the shape of a square. After a brief moment, the four spheres will swiftly hover towards the position of the player. This flight has a relatively short maximum range, so backing up when she uses this spell should leave you harmfree.
She can spawn two projectiles above the player that hover towards their position, it's as easy to dodge as the original one.
She can cast a shield around her. The shield consists of many, flower-like orbs that will block any form of range attack you throw her way. The shield is not only defensive, but will damage you, if you try to tumble into it.
She will drop the shield for her next attack, a long, spiral-formed line of projectiles. There are gaps in the lines though, and with the right timing, you can even dodge through the spiral towards Choir.
After dropping to half of her health, she begins charging. Upon completion, she will shoot a circle of small, slow-moving projectiles that grows wider over time. Keep a good amount of space between you and her, and it should be possible to dodge through a gap in the circle.
She will also start spawning small projectiles, that track the location of the character when they spawn and shoot down to the ground after a brief moment.
In addition to all that, she uses some sort of an energy rain, which makes a stream of projectiles fall down upon the characters location when spawned.
Archpriestess Choir can only be fought after giving her the Soft Tissue, which belonged to her sister, Fennel. First time players may never find the item as it's kind of hidden and requires the Cat form. Anyway, to explain that high burst of damage at the start of the fight. I have Necklace of Sacrifice, which increases Kaho's attack by 100% when on low health, on top of the Tainted Missive, which when used, drains health and boosts attack by 100% so at the start of any given fight from here on out temporarily, I can have 200% attack damage for a brief time before it drops to 100%
For doing no damage, she drops the Bloodstained tissue. When equipped as an active item, creates orbs that rotate around Kaho before quickly spinning and bursting out from her. Similar to Choir's own attacks.
