Monster Hunter Stories 2 - Special Elder's Lair Z7 fights
My SD card is nearly full and doesn't have enough room for Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak, so I figured now was a good time to go back to MH Stories 2 and finally finish the game: clear the Special Elder's Lair, and get as many awards as possible.
After being engrossed for a few months at launch I stopped playing around nine months ago. I had reached S.Elder's Lair Z6... which happens to be the very best area for farming experience (through Quick Finishes) since later floors have deviants/elder dragons that can't be quick-finished, and so I ended up just farming non-stop before burning out and moving on. In the end I don't even think pure levels really give you much of an edge for these time-limit challenges though, you really need to know how to stack buffs and debuffs and always win head-to-heads.
Gravios is first, and after a few tests where I couldn't even do half health in the allotted time I whipped up a bleed + buff Seregios set (easy to do since Seregios actually always comes with both Merciless Roar plus Shredding Scales!), at which point it's fairly straight-forward: as often as possible, try to stack bleed (~x2 damage on next move), Merciless Roar (+30% to all elemental attack), and crits (+100% damage, additive to Head-to-Head and bingo and elemental attack buffs) in order to get crazy bursts of damage. My very first serious attempt actually cleared in 7 turns, so then I restarted and tried to record it and struggled way more and settled for 9, haha.
Glavenus is surprisingly even more durable, so I had to give Seregios Ruin Song (-20% to all elemental defenses) as well as Kin Cost Down XL and grinding until 13+ start-of-battle kinship in order to stack even more multipliers and still not run out of kinship from spamming bow skills. (Maybe gunlance would've worked better? Never actually used gunlance yet...) I found that trying to keep myself alive using Absolute Evasion meant I'd run out of time, because I'd both waste turns on my buffs but also not be gaining kinship and be forced to not use skills, so in the end I found it better to simply die and then tank another hit to get back to low health for Heroics L.
Agnaktor is silly because it resists all weapon types so it's more a 'do you actually have a water monstie raised?' check, hahaha. Soulseer Mizutsune thus makes quick work of it (thankfully the kinship skill can crit, unlike literally every other non-recoil water move) thanks to Pump Up giving it x1.7 base attack before calculations, and then the usual Seregios buffing+debuffing strat takes care of Bazelgeuse afterwards. Crazy how generous the turn limit for this third fight is!
I don't really take advantage of anything Seregios-specific (like non-elemental attack/defense or kinship skill), so maybe something else would have been better. I gave it Dancer in the hopes of acting before me to set up for more bursts but in the end I don't think anything changed; actually having a speed tie with me means it sometimes moves after and sometimes moves before me, which is nice because after trying to clear these fights I learned that the RNG is actually deterministic if you do the fight immediately after loading. I ended up doing the fights a few dozen times, planning out moves ahead of time and then making sure to input them as fast as possible for a good recording, hahaha.
