Most missions have assigned difficulties: Normal, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert. Oh and there's nightmare but that's rather hard to place in terms of difficulty.

The Valve missions are a good reference for what sort of difficulties the missions of each difficulty label should aim for. Even if Advanced can be a little inconsistent. (Compare data demolition to Bone Shaker and you will see what I mean.)

All of the Valve waves featured can give you around 2200-2500 Total Credits prior to getting to them baring collection bonuses. (Crash Course, Day of Wreakoning, Hamlet Hostility and Mannslaughter)

It can be really irritating to deal with a mission that is harder than advertised, especially the lower difficulties.
Normal You should expect even teams that don't get in close with their weapons and engineers who turtle on buildings to be able to handle the mission. Certain robot types should not be included unless they are late on and alone (Super Scouts, Major Crits, Giant Medic, Giant Blackbox soldier, Giant Burstfire Soldier). Pretty much every non giant should be easy skill.
Intermediate is similar but you have more room to add tougher robots and more difficult formations of small robots and you can use the weaker giants in greater numbers. Players should be modestly competent for this difficulty but not really required to play mostly optimally.
Advanced is usually where you can get away with most wave ideas as long as you don't go overboard. Most waves have robots paired with giants and ubermedics are present more frequently.
Expert missions should require a team that has competent medic pickers a competent scout, and an engineer who works with his team to hold the line against numerous giants tanks and ubermedics.

Now that I am talking about this you might be wondering how my missions are in terms of consistency with the difficulties established with valve. Ehh it's been quite hit or miss. This sort of thing takes time to figure out.
