Template files are really quite useful for storing custom robots. And it turns out you only need to copy robot_standard.pop get rid of everything and add the lines shown in the 1st 2 screenshots. Then you make a template, then you add #base (nameofyourtamplate) to a mission if you want to use that template file.
It's that simple.
