My Favorite Most Unique Video Game Controllers In My Gaming Collection
We've been featuring a ton of different controllers on the channel lately, from the Xbox, mostly, but there are other controllers in my collection. I have owned some rather unique controllers in the past, and there are a lot of ones I absolutely love. What are 3 of my favorite and most unique video game controllers in my collection? Let's take a look, as I think you've seen or heard of most of these, but have you seen them?
1. The Ultra Racer (PS1/N64)
Up first, we have the Ultra Racer! Designed for both PlayStation and Nintendo 64 (I think there's an Xbox version, too), this is the ultimate RC car controller for racing games. You hold it just like an RC transmitter—using the trigger for throttle and brake and the wheel for steering. Of course, it also has all the standard face buttons you need! It's an awesome piece of niche racing tech.
2. The Power Pad (NES)
If you know this one, your childhood was awesome! This is the legendary Power Pad for the NES. You'd spread this mat out on the floor and use the big numbered buttons for games like World Class Track Meet. The intended way was to run on it in bare feet or stockings, but let's be honest—most of us knelt down and slapped the buttons with our hands to go faster! It's an iconic piece of gaming history that later inspired things like Dance Dance Revolution (DDR).
3. R.O.B. The Robotic Operating Buddy (NES)
Finally, we have not just a controller, but a buddy—the R.O.B. (Robotic Operating Buddy)! I was thrilled to pick up a complete one a few years ago. R.O.B. was a unique accessory for the NES that you'd play with games like Gyromite and Stack-Up. The way he worked was wild: you aimed his "eyes" at your CRT TV, and he'd spin the gyros (in Gyromite) and use them to trigger the red or blue gates on your screen.
A super cool fact about the Gyromite game cartridge: it actually has a built-in Famicom-to-NES adapter! This allowed you to play imported Japanese Famicom games on your North American NES console. Very, very cool!
What's the most unique controller you have? Let me know in the comments! And seriously, how many of you own that bonkers Resident Evil chainsaw controller? I'm looking at you @DoYouNerd 👀
