Napoleon employed the battaillon carré formation again at the second battle of Castiglione, which took place 20 miles northwest of Mantua on August 5. Facing Wurmser's Austrian forces, Napoleon had over 30,000 men at his disposal. Masséna's division was positioned on the left, Augereau's forces were in front of Castiglione, Kilmaine's cavalry acted as reserves on the right, and other units were strategically placed. Napoleon planned to draw Wurmser's reserves northwards by feigning a withdrawal.

The battle commenced with fighting along the entire line. Augereau captured Solferino, Despinoy arrived to support the left-center, and Marmont led a battery towards Monte Medolano. Wurmser found himself trapped between two French armies, with a third threatening his rear. Forced to withdraw, he narrowly escaped capture by French light cavalry. The Austrian army suffered heavy losses, with 2,000 killed and wounded, 1,000 captured, and the loss of twenty guns. The French had around 1,100 casualties.
