Napoleon's Headquarters: A Key to His Success in Italy
https://youtu.be/Fl0oyzLSHBM
Napoleon personally moved between several locations, including Brescia, Castelnuovo, Desenzano, Roverbella, Castiglione, Goïto, and Peschiera, setting up his mobile headquarters wherever it provided the best view of the campaign's progress. His constant activity in the sweltering heat led to the exhaustion of several horses. Despite the challenging conditions, Napoleon remained actively involved, closely monitoring the situation and issuing orders.
On July 29, as anticipated, Quasdanovich pushed General Sauret out of Salò, although the town changed hands multiple times. On the same day, Masséna was attacked at La Corona and Rivoli and had to conduct a fighting retreat down the Adige River to Bussolengo. The Austrians made advances and captured Rivoli. Napoleon reassured Masséna, expressing confidence that they would recover the lost ground with courage.
However, on July 30, the Austrians executed a successful surprise attack on Brescia, capturing the city's garrison and hospitals with minimal casualties.
